The Evolution

The Mini is, quite simply, one of the most influential cars ever built, and it’s a testament to the original design of Alex Issigonis that its production lasted for so many decades with the design barely changing. See how the Mini’s shape has evolved over the years through this series of morphing illustrations in the Evolution of Iconic Cars.

On UK roads they were once as common as street lights. Before BMW took the reigns on production in 2000, more than 5.3 million had been built. Although they are now considered cherished classics, originally Minis were a symbol of British automotive ingenuity in response to the fuel crisis and German ‘bubble’ car trend.

All these years later, the Mini remains highly thought of among car aficionados, illustrated by its recent crowning as best British-built car in history by Auto Express magazine, beating the likes of the Jaguar E-Type and Aston Martin DB5 to come out on top.
